OUR ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

We strive to make a positive contribution to the environment in every way possible, and believe in making a positive impact on the surrounding area.

We are committed to improving the way we live for future generations.

We ensure the responsible use of energy, and aim to improve our customers, and our own, environmental awareness.

Our belief is to work with nature, not against it, and this in turn means that we have a minimal impact on our natural surroundings.

Our Tipis are truly organic and fit in beautifully with the surrounding woodland.

A holiday at Pinewood is about peace and tranquillity, and about being at one with the earth.

Our carbon footprint is extremely low.

On site, we do not provide shops, entertainment, or cafes, as we encourage visitors to interact with the local community, villages, and Scarborough – again, having a positive effect on our surroundings.

·

Energy Consumption – we reduce our energy consumption where ever possible, and we actively encourage our visitors to do the same. Our Tipis do not have any electricity to them, and the wood used to heat them, comes from our own woodland.

·        Suppliers – we use local suppliers where ever possible. Our tipis have been sourced and supplied within 20 miles of our site.

·        Waste – we have a very organised and extensive recycle area, and although this is prominent on our site, we actively point out and encourage our customers to recycle as much as possible. We also personally take additional recyclable products which our local council do not collect for us. We also buy products where packaging has been kept to a minimum. We compost all garden waste, and even mulch the grass cuttings, where it is not required to be collected.

·        Transport – as pinewood is only 1.5 miles from Scarborough town centre and the railway station, it is very easy to use public transport, and we do encourage this. It is easily within walking distance from the town centre. While we recognise that many customers do want to use their own transport; we do suggest they use the park and ride system in the town. Cycling is also an easy option for visitors.

·        Materials and Buildings – we believe we are extremely sustainable by using materials from sustainable, local sources and suppliers, wherever possible. Our Tipi poles are made from a local pine wood, the bases are made from old pallets, and we use recycled stationery and other products. We do the majority of the work ourselves on site, but we always use local tradesmen when we need extra help.

·        Conservation – we do encourage conservation and biodiversity around our property. We have planted over250 trees/shrubs and hedging over the last 2 years, and will continue to do so. This will encourage even more wildlife to our ever growing number of animals. We personally have a large greenhouse, and vegetable plot, from which we enjoy some very tasty and nutritious produce.

We are always open to suggestions on how to improve our holiday park, especially when it comes to environmental issues. All suggestions are taken on board, and considered, and where possible, will be implemented.

While we make every effort to help the environment, we do realise that there are still many improvements to be made. Some of these improvements do require a substantial initial cost, but we do have a list of future measures which we will implement as soon as we can. These include:

·        Sensor lights in all public areas

·        Composting toilet

·        Solar powered showers

·        More compost bins

·        Rain water collectors

·        Bike hire

·        Further tree planting

·        Further scheme to attract more wildlife

·        Using even more eco friendly products

·        Support charities

·        Join various ‘green’ organisations

·        Installation of electric meters on our caravan pitches. Customers will only pay for what they use, but by making customers of their own electricity consumption, they will be less likely to be wasteful.

·        Build a number of eco lodges

Our ultimate goal at Pinewood is to be self sufficient. We would like to be powered ‘off grid’, and hopefully rely on wind and solar power. We are also researching the possibilities and costing of using ground source heating for our own home as well as the site in the future.
